In 2002 while Jon was on his way to help his brother Eric and sister-in-law Deanna move their grandmother out of her apartment he stopped at a local gas station to get a cup of coffee. The coffee looked un-appealing being thick and black however he was tired and needed a pick me up. When he got to his car he needed to jot down something on a piece of paper and thought to himself “This coffee smells good. I know it’s not going to taste good, I just need the smell. Wouldn’t it be great if I could smell coffee all day” He looked down at his hand and saw a pen he was going to write with and thought “If this pen smelled like coffee I could work all day and be more awake” . Immediately he called Eric and told him the idea. Eric currently had a small company and experience in new products and Jon wanted to bounce the idea off of him while it was fresh on his mind. They spoke for only a few minutes and Eric thought it was an interesting idea. 30 minutes later Jon arrived at their grandmothers and there was Eric…he hadn’t packed anything but had 5 or 6 napkins with writing on them…this was their first business plan.
By 2003 they had their first Scented Pens. They were French Vanilla and Coffee house blend and were offered in 3 colors. By 2005 Scented Pens added on a few more fragrances and Eric and Jon were granted their first patent (#6899486).
Currently Scented Pens are now offered in both metal and plastic pens with stock fragrances, custom fragrances and custom imprinting available.
Scented Pens continues to be family owned and operated and its products are now currently used as wedding favors, retail items, birth announcements, brand specialty and promotional items on 5 continents.
